Setback at the Emirates: Arsenal’s Woes Deepen Before PSG Test

Arsenal’s ambitions took a serious hit with a home defeat to Bournemouth, disrupting their preparation for the biggest game of their season — a Champions League semi-final against PSG.

Saturday's 2-1 defeat exposed worrying flaws in Mikel Arteta’s team, particularly as they prepare for a must-win in Paris, needing to overturn a one-goal deficit from the first leg.

The Gunners’ only realistic shot at silverware lies in Europe, but this unexpected defeat has sparked doubts. Arteta, however, wants to transform the team’s frustration into drive.

“It didn’t help us build rhythm,” Arteta said. “It made us angry. That’s energy we have to turn into something positive.”

Although Arsenal looked dominant early, set-piece defending again proved their downfall. Bournemouth’s first real chance came from a long throw, which led to Huijsen’s goal.

Evanilson then capitalised on another lapse from a corner to give Bournemouth the lead. Arsenal’s record of set-piece goals conceded — nearly 39% — remains the highest in the league.

Equally troubling is their inability to hold leads. Arsenal have now dropped 21 points from winning positions, echoing their worst ever performance in this area from 2019-20.

In the closing moments against Bournemouth, Arsenal failed to muster a response — not even a shot. That lack of fight raises major concerns ahead of their trip to Paris.
