Jumbo’s Triumph: A Heartwarming Tale of Empathy and Courage Touches Millions

The Indonesian film Jumbo has achieved a major milestone, reaching 7.6 million viewers and claiming the third spot among the highest-grossing Indonesian films of all time. Currently playing in theaters across the country, Jumbo tells the story of Don, a young boy on a journey to prove himself to a classmate who frequently bullies him. The film’s director and screenwriter, Ryan Adriandhy, shared that Jumbo aims to teach children the value of empathy and the importance of treating all beings with kindness.

During a special screening at CGV FX Sudirman in Central Jakarta on April 29, 2025, Ryan emphasized the significance of empathy as a central message in the film. He noted that everyone should learn to listen and be compassionate, not only toward people but also toward all living creatures. According to him, since humans are inherently social beings, understanding and kindness are essential in daily interactions and relationships.

Ryan further explained that instilling empathy in children should begin early in life. He believes that helping children understand their roots and the love surrounding them can foster a sense of security and connection. “When children are aware of the people who love and support them, they’ll feel that everything will be alright,” he said, underlining the film's deeper message of self-awareness and belonging.

The inspiration behind Jumbo came from the childhood experiences of Ryan and other creators involved in the project. He highlighted the importance of providing safe spaces for children, where they can grow into courageous and confident individuals. Ryan explained that a nurturing environment can empower children to face challenges without fear, drawing from the creators’ personal reflections on their own upbringings.

Another central theme in Jumbo is the issue of bullying, which remains prevalent among children today. Ryan expressed his hope that the film will encourage young viewers to embrace differences and develop empathy for others. He sees Jumbo not just as entertainment, but as a meaningful tool for social learning, especially for children who may be facing or witnessing bullying in their daily lives.
