Florida Talks Loom as War, Diplomacy, and Rival Peace Plans Shape Ukraine’s Future

As negotiations accelerate, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced plans to meet US President Donald Trump in Florida, underscoring renewed efforts to halt Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine.

The planned meeting comes amid continued violence, with Russian air strikes hitting Kyiv and Kharkiv, causing deaths and injuries while air defence systems worked to repel incoming attacks.

Zelensky has said the talks will prioritise a US-backed peace initiative, alongside discussions on long-term American security guarantees and a separate economic agreement.

A central proposal involves establishing a demilitarised zone in eastern Ukraine, temporarily sidestepping disputes over sovereignty while reducing the risk of renewed frontline fighting.

Ukraine has also suggested withdrawing troops up to 40 kilometres from parts of Donbas it still controls, provided Russia mirrors the move from occupied industrial territories.

Russia, which controls most of Donetsk and nearly all of neighbouring Luhansk, has dismissed aspects of the US plan as incompatible with negotiations it has held directly with Washington.

Kremlin officials have maintained a hard stance, insisting Ukrainian forces must leave all of Donbas or Russia will continue military operations without compromise.

Trump has expressed confidence that discussions with both Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin could progress smoothly, while stressing his decisive role in approving any final agreement.

Zelensky, however, has pointed to progress in negotiations, noting that revised proposals now include US and European security guarantees resembling Nato’s Article 5 commitments.
